We repair and replace ignition cylinders, handle ignition switch problems and rekey ignitions to match your door key, on site in Bellevue.
Symptoms of a bad ignition cylinder
A key that sticks, turns only with jiggling, or will not go all the way in often means worn wafers in the cylinder or a worn key. A key that turns but nothing happens can point to the ignition switch behind the cylinder. A key that will not turn at all can be a locked steering column, a damaged cylinder or the wrong key.
Key stuck or will not turn: safe checks first
Make sure the car is in park (or neutral with the clutch in), and gently turn the steering wheel left and right while turning the key, which releases a locked steering column. Try your spare key if you have one. Avoid forcing the key or spraying general-purpose lubricants into the lock, which can make things worse. If none of this works, call us.
Repair, replace or rekey
Depending on the car and the damage, we may repair the cylinder, replace it, or replace the ignition switch. When a new cylinder is installed, it can be rekeyed so your existing door key still works, so you do not end up carrying two keys.
Locksmith or mechanic?
Problems with the key, the lock cylinder and the ignition switch are locksmith work. If the key turns normally but the engine does not crank, the cause may be the battery, starter or wiring, which is a job for a mechanic. We tell you which it is.
What affects the job
It comes down to what failed: a worn cylinder, a bad ignition switch or the key itself. How the steering column comes apart on your model also changes the work. See what affects the cost, and check the neighborhoods we cover across Bellevue.
Questions about ignition repair
Can you replace just the ignition cylinder?
Often, yes. Many ignition problems are solved by replacing or repairing the cylinder alone. We check the switch and the key as well before deciding.
Will I need a new key after an ignition replacement?
Not always. A new cylinder can often be rekeyed to match your existing key. We confirm the options for your car before starting.
Can you fix the ignition on a push-to-start car?
Push-to-start cars do not have a key cylinder. If the car will not start, the problem is often the smart key or its programming, which we can check.
