The type of key
A basic metal key, a transponder key with a chip, a high-security laser-cut key, a remote-head key and a push-to-start smart key all involve different parts and different programming. Smart keys and high-security keys typically involve the most work.
Whether you still have a working key
Adding a key when you already have one is the simpler job. When every key is lost, the key has to be created from scratch and programmed to the car, which takes more time and equipment.
The vehicle's year, make and model
Security systems change from one model year to the next. Some cars program quickly, some need extra steps, and a few require dealer-only access. This is why we ask for the exact year and model before quoting.
Programming and extra work
Removing lost keys from the car's memory, extracting a broken key or replacing an ignition cylinder are separate tasks that can be part of the visit.
Dealer, mobile locksmith or kiosk?
Dealer: usually needs the car on site, which can mean a tow, and may need to order the key and book an appointment. Some newer vehicles can only be programmed by the dealer.
Mobile locksmith: comes to the car with key blanks and programming tools, so most jobs are done in one visit wherever the car is parked.
Kiosk or parts store: can copy many basic keys and some chip keys if you bring a working key. Smart keys, high-security keys and lost-key situations usually need a locksmith or the dealer.
OEM or aftermarket parts
Original manufacturer keys and quality aftermarket keys can both work, depending on the vehicle. If you already bought a key or fob, send us the part number and we will tell you whether it can be programmed to your car.
Common questions
Why can’t you give one price for every car key?
Two keys that look alike can need very different work. The chip type, the blade, whether a working key exists and the car’s security system all change the job, so we quote each vehicle individually.
Is it cheaper to make a spare before I lose my only key?
Generally, a key made from a working key involves less work than creating one with no key at all. That is why we recommend a spare.
Can AutoZone or a hardware store replace my car key?
Many stores can copy a basic blade, and some can clone certain chips. A new smart key, an all-keys-lost situation or a high-security key usually needs a locksmith or the dealer.
